Connecting in Eeyou Istchee: A Modern Guide to Marketing and Brand Strategy

If you open a standard marketing textbook, it’ll give you a thousand different strategies, platforms, and acronyms. But it probably won’t tell you the most important thing about building a brand in Eeyou Istchee: you have to understand where the community gathers, how they share stories, and what they trust.

After more than two decades of working with Cree businesses and organizations, I’ve seen firsthand what works and what doesn’t. It’s not about flashy, generic campaigns. It’s about authentic connection and showing up where people actually are. And in 2025, that means having a smart strategy that blends the new digital campfire with the trusted, traditional voices.

The Digital Community Hall: Facebook is King

Let’s be clear: in the Cree Nation, Facebook isn’t just a social media app; it’s the central hub of community life. It’s the bulletin board, the news channel, the family photo album, and the marketplace all rolled into one. If you want to reach people, you absolutely must be here.

But just creating a page isn’t enough. To be effective, your strategy should reflect how people use the platform:

  • Be Visual and Local: Share high-quality photos and videos of local people, events, and landscapes. A picture of a new piece of equipment is good; a picture of a community member using that equipment is great.
  • It’s a Conversation: When people comment, respond! Ask questions, run polls, and engage with the community. Treat your page like a conversation, not a billboard.
  • Share Community News: Don’t just post about your own business or department. Share important community announcements, celebrate local achievements, and be a valuable source of information.
  • Go Live: Hosting a community event or have an important update? Facebook Live is an incredibly powerful tool for reaching people in real-time.

The Trusted Voice: Don’t Forget Community Radio

While the digital world is booming, we can’t forget the established and deeply trusted voice of community radio. For many, especially our respected Elders, the radio is the most reliable source of news and information. It’s the comforting voice that’s been a part of their daily lives for years.

Integrating radio into your strategy shows respect for the entire community and ensures your message reaches every generation.

  • Sponsor a Program: Sponsoring the local weather forecast, a news segment, or a popular call-in show is a great way to build brand recognition and goodwill.
  • Run Effective Ads: A well-crafted ad, perhaps in both English and Cree, can be incredibly effective. It’s a direct line to a captive audience.
  • Be a Guest: Offer to be an expert guest on a local program to talk about your services, share important information, or answer community questions.

Your Brand is Your Story, Told Consistently

Your channels—Facebook and radio—are how you deliver your message. Your brand strategy is what that message is. In a close-knit community, your brand is essentially your reputation. It needs to be authentic and consistent.

Ask yourself:

  • What is our story? Why does our business or organization exist, and how do we serve the community?
  • What is our voice? Are we professional and informative? Warm and friendly? Inspiring and motivational?
  • How do we look? Are our visuals (logo, photos) consistent and reflective of our community values?

Your story and voice should be the same whether you’re posting on Facebook, running an ad on the radio, or speaking to someone in person.
