In 2017, the grassroots Chisasibi Mental Wellness Team sought to formalize their vital community work. Their goal was to become an independent non-profit organization, Inshiyuu Miyuupimatisiuun, to secure stable, long-term funding and expand their culture-based services. They needed a comprehensive partner to guide them through every stage of this complex transformation.
We provided end-to-end strategic support, weaving together governance, program development, and digital services to build a resilient and impactful organization from the ground up.
- Foundational Strategy & Governance: We guided the registration of the organization as a federal non-profit, developed corporate by-laws, and established a robust organizational structure. This included leading government relations and successfully negotiating a multi-year funding transfer, securing $2M from Health Canada over six years.
- Culture-Based Program Development: We collaborated closely with the team to research and develop a unique, culture-based mental wellness service delivery model. This resulted in a comprehensive suite of materials for a land-based healing program, including a 5-year community wellness plan and detailed program manuals.
- Capacity Building & Knowledge Sharing: We focused on amplifying their impact by strengthening collaborations with universities and national Indigenous mental wellness institutions, supporting participation at major conferences, and fostering national research networks to inform best practices.
Through our close partnership, the Chisasibi Wellness Centre successfully transitioned into a stable, federally recognized non-profit with a clear strategic framework. The organization is now positioned for sustainable, long-term success with a clear vision for the future.
The secured multi-year funding ensures its vital, culturally-grounded services can continue to support the well-being of the Chisasibi community for years to come. Furthermore, to share the story of the land-based healing initiative, we produced a short documentary film following a group of youth on their journey, creating a powerful tool for outreach and knowledge sharing.
