Key Outcomes

  • Architected a centralized, georeferenced database for Canadian Indigenous jurisprudence to enhance legal research accessibility.
  • Deployed versatile React-based web and kiosk applications from a unified codebase to streamline data management.
  • Enhanced global network visibility through interactive, bilingual mapping platforms highlighting researchers and academic partners.
  • Translated complex, decade-long academic research into highly accessible visual media to drive public engagement.

The Mandate

Réseau DIALOG operates as a vital space for relational and ethical engagement between Indigenous communities and academic institutions. Founded on the co-construction and mobilization of knowledge, the inter-university and interdisciplinary network actively participates in reconciliation, social reconstruction, and decolonization efforts. Anchored at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and funded by leading Canadian research councils, DIALOG collaborates with over 100 individuals alongside diverse academic and Indigenous partners.

As a dynamic academic institute managing multiple complex initiatives, DIALOG faced a significant operational friction point: a high demand for specialized web development and digital applications that exceeded the capacity of their internal web team. To bring their ambitious research projects and interactive platforms to life, they required a dependable, long-term digital partner capable of understanding both their technical requirements and their deep commitment to Indigenous knowledge sharing. Over a seven-year partnership, Zerosum was mandated to architect, develop, and deploy a series of sophisticated, user-centric web applications and digital ecosystems to support their diverse projects and enhance community accessibility.

Our Integrated Solutions

Indigenous Jurisprudence: Mapping 30 Years of Aboriginal Law Through a Custom Digital Ecosystem

To support DIALOG's mandate, we architected and developed a suite of robust web applications tailored to specific research and educational initiatives. A cornerstone of this work was the Indigenous Jurisprudence Autochtone portal, a custom-built, georeferenced, and interactive database of Canadian jurisprudence in Aboriginal affairs. Developed utilizing WordPress and custom Google Maps integrations, this critical tool visualizes the complex legal realities and historical alliances that shape Indigenous land rights and government relations today.

Global Mapping and Member Visualization

For the Members Map project, we engineered a bilingual, interactive web application designed to visualize DIALOG’s global network of researchers, collaborators, leadership, and students. Built on a modern Headless WordPress and React architecture, the application supports two distinct deployment modes from a single codebase. The physical kiosk mode operates with an on-screen touch virtual keyboard and utilizes pre-synced offline data for seamless on-site performance. Simultaneously, the standard web mode fetches live data dynamically via the WordPress REST API, delivering a frictionless user experience across devices.

Nomade University Kiosk & Web Application

Expanding on our custom web application expertise, we architected an interactive, bilingual digital platform designed to effectively showcase Nomade university programs, high-resolution visual posters, and dynamic photo galleries. Built for maximum flexibility, this robust application operates seamlessly across two distinct environments. In its live web deployment, it fetches dynamic updates directly from a Content Management System to ensure global accessibility. Simultaneously, it functions in a self-contained, offline kiosk mode explicitly optimized for physical touchscreen hardware, providing an intuitive, uninterrupted on-site experience that bridges the gap between great ideas and functional applications.

Students Gallery — Interactive Web Application

Building upon our interactive touchscreen technology, we developed a dedicated Headless WordPress-powered application to seamlessly present and preserve the vital scientific research of Master's and Ph.D. students. This specialized digital platform empowers visitors to intuitively browse, search, and explore complex academic posters from any device. By transforming a traditional physical process into a scalable digital ecosystem, we provided a permanent, accessible home for this academic knowledge, utilizing the power and flexibility of WordPress to ensure the internal team can effortlessly manage their content without being locked into proprietary software.

Infographic Video Production and Knowledge Mobilization

Beyond software development, we enriched DIALOG’s digital presence through high-impact video productions. We produced "Un portrait de la population autochtone dans les villes au Québec," a compelling infographic video that synthesized and presented the complex scientific findings of the ODENA Research Alliance (2009–2019). This visual storytelling piece effectively translated a decade of collaborative research between the DIALOG Network and the Regroupement des centres d’amitié autochtones du Québec into an accessible, engaging format for broader public education.

Measurable Outcomes and Lasting Impact

The comprehensive digital transformation led by Zerosum has profoundly amplified Réseau DIALOG’s capacity to share and mobilize co-constructed knowledge. By replacing fragmented, outsourced development with a cohesive suite of custom-built applications, DIALOG now possesses a scalable, future-proof digital infrastructure. The deployment of interactive kiosks and dynamic web platforms has significantly increased accessibility to academic research, allowing scholars, students, and the general public to seamlessly engage with Indigenous jurisprudence and global educational programs. Rooted in our philosophy of building long-term relationships and self-determined success, these digital ecosystems not only reduced administrative friction for the institute's internal teams but also established a powerful, lasting technological foundation for advancing decolonization efforts and Indigenous reconciliation on an international scale.
